The Atlas Obscured Collection Aluminum Chair consists of four layers of laser-cut maps. The aluminum frames and layers are meticulously heated and hand bent over steel forms to achieve a consistent geometry. The chair is then powder-coated and reinforced with machined stainless-steel brackets.

Collector Series Aluminum Chairs are entirely custom and are made to order based on your city and narrative. Each piece is made with intention and care. The length of time it takes to trace and laser cut your selected map layers and then produce your chair may vary, depending on the complexity of each map layer. As such, production timelines may be subject to minor adjustments in rare cases. Please allow additional time for shipping.

To place your order, fill out the order form on this page, which provides an opportunity to share your intentions for your city and the dates that are significant to you. Share as much detail as you’re comfortable with and our team will guide you through the rest. A minimum deposit of 50% is required to confirm your order.
Once you place your order, a designer will promptly follow up to schedule a design consultation via video or phone call. Together, we’ll explore your desired dates and the personal narrative behind them. We’ll learn which areas of the city are most important to you; if there are locations you specifically want included and if there is an orientation of the map you prefer. We will also review your finish options and answer any questions you may have about next steps.
Our team will research the history of your city and source historical maps that correspond with your dates as closely as possible. Then, we'll present these curated maps to you with visuals that represent what will appear on your chair. Together, we'll select the version that will become the foundation of your custom chair. The research process typically takes up to 1 week.
We will meticulously trace each custom map layer with CAD software precision, with each layer georeferenced to produce a historical narrative that communicates the evolution of the city over the time period you’ve selected. A photorealistic rendering will then be developed for your review before production begins. The map tracing process typically takes up to 3 weeks.
Your maps will be laser cut and expertly hand-formed onto custom-bent frames with the utmost care and consideration to detail. Once assembled and fully resurfaced by our production specialists for quality assurance, your chair is then powder coated to your selected color. Updates will be provided throughout the production process to share the creative process along the way. The production process typically takes up to 8 weeks.
Once your chair is complete, it is carefully wrapped and packaged for durable protection using environmentally conscious materials. You may choose to have it shipped to your home for a flat rate, or if local to our Cambridge, MA location, we will happily arrange to welcome you for pick up at our design studio.
